blippo
An exercise in formal composition, Adventures in blippo is the result of designer Brian Heffernan’s long-standing fascination with the modernist-derived typeface Blippo Black.

Consisting of 10 one-colour A1 screen prints, each an edition of just ive, the series of works foregrounds, through its use of type as formal elements for the creation of nonlinguistic visual schemes, the signiicance of letterforms beyond their role as carriers of discursive meaning.

Created in 1969 by Robert Trogman and Joe Taylor, Blippo Black revisits Herbert Bayer’s 1925 ultra-functional Bauhaus-commissioned typeface Universal, giving the resolutely geometric forms a slightly softer, less rational, more (albeit subtly) adorned appearance in their redrawing.

It is this tension – between form for communicative function and the notion of a typeface’s pleasurable consumption as a collection of decorative forms in their own right – that Brian has taken as his point of departure in creating Adventures in blippo.

Dislocated from their primary function as linguistic signifiers, certain letters are taken by Brian from the Blippo Black alphabet and, through a limited number of artistic devices, elaborated into intriguing, minimalist visual compositions.

The titles of each of the works in the series (for example, ‘CX25’) serve, however, to reinscribe in the viewer’s mind the original purpose of the individual shapes found within the compositions, thereby acknowledging, and taking pleasure in, their multiple meaning.

A further tension is identiiable in Brian’s work, in terms of his process. Intention is called into question, for while the compositions are on the one hand the result of four years of almost obsessive consideration and iterative reworking, the designer also states that he has ‘allowed the letterforms to dictate their own compositions, in an attempt to express the true nature of the typeface’.

This is the first exhibition of life drawing in Ireland emphasising the importance and long standing tradition of life drawing in Ballyfermot College of Further Education.

The work on display is predominately preoccupied with good processes leading to fluency of line and personal expression with less emphasis on image making. There is a selection of drawing techniques explored through a wide range of media.

This exhibition Life by the Undergraduate is to show the artistic community the quality of work produced by the students in BCFE and ISA.

A collaborative project from Third Year Fine Art DIT

26 - 28 March 2009

25th March 2009 18:00 to 20:00

FLOCK

FLOCK is a collaborative project amongst students in third year of the Fine Art Department of the Dublin Institute of Technology serving a dual purpose; an experiment in the craft of exhibition making, and a public forum for critical debate on works produced and ideas explored by the students.

Works presented engage with a variety of processes, methodologies and media. Included in the collection are installations opening discourses on the roles of language, semiotics and text in an art environment.

Drawings manifest themselves from debates around the very nature of the act of drawing. The definition of “drawing” is stretched beyond its limits.

Expressions and critiques on popular culture ranging from the fashion industry, through to advertising are manifested through diverse practices incorporating moving image, photography and the 3-D.

Discussions around ideas of narrative and play are conducted through sound installations and traditional print methods.

The assumed dichotomy between art and science is explored through paint and other modes of 2-D representation, as are ideas of identity and the self in a contemporary world.

The show also presents works in progress from students produced in collaboration with, and as a result of, various communities in which they have been involved with.

A more detailed description of individual artists’ work is available online at

Don Sheehan

Introduction was by Jennifer Doyle, Curator National Photographic Archives.

Exhibition was opened by Dr. John Bowman, Broadcaster and Historian.

Charles Baudelaire’s usage and theorization of the French verb, “fláner” to stroll, created the concept of the, “Fláneur“, a person who walks the street in order to experience it. In experiencing the street, one remarks, or not, on that experience. What comes out is ones interpretation of what has been seen and felt. Depending on who you are, your position in life, your morality or lack of it, your reasoning, your emotional state, you filter what you see and interpret it as seminal or banal.

Urbis Modo is a collection of Photographs taken in the center of Dublin during the period 1998-2008. They chronicle the journey of many people during the night time hours. They have been recognized and awarded the Curtin O’Donough Photographic prize from the Royal Hibernian Academy and recently have been acquired by the national Library as a discreet collection.

Anne Marie Hayes & Colm Desmond

Colm Desmond is presently investigating the legacy of formalist and material practices within
modernity, at the intersection of post-minimal and object-based approaches. A collaged painting-
aesthetic, presented in 2D and 3D formats, emphasises both the formal and tactile qualities of naturally
degraded or synthetically processed materials. Post their original use, these materials are collected,
rearranged and reflected back as an historical legacy of studio practice. The narratives between the
different elements drive the work and its framing and display. Historical quotation of formal elements
is deflected in a mise-en-abyme of the component parts.

Anne Marie Hayes works in video exploring our relationship with the world using performative interventions to explore ideas ranging from agoraphobia to claustrophobic incarceration experienced either through psychological or physical restrictions. Sometimes our existence is not harmonious and self-alienation in the form of agoraphobia or forced alienation in the form of containment by society
can disrupt our place in the world.

Maurice Caplice show

“My Practice strives to highlight the extent of tribalness in our social structure. The work has become a subtle hint at division caused by human tribalness. The automatons wear their sashes proclaiming their tribe by colour. They go about their business, falling, fighting, staring, sleeping, sashed up in their divided landscapes.

The smaller gangs who sit and knock the others, the larger clan and creed to which you belong. We all wear our sashes, our mark, and our colour proclaiming whom and to which we belong.

Tribalness without which we would not function, Tribalness without which there would be no division.”

Maurice Caplice, Lempa, Cyprus, 2005.

“In an overpowering disposable society, the human becomes disposable, Overcrowding in many countries lead to a lesser value of life. In this country the sense of Irish ness becomes more important as the country rightly becomes more multicultural. Tribalism has reared its ugly head and taken us to its comforting bosom. Let’s see what happens next.

The work has never meant to be a sermon from a pulpit, just an impartial view on societies and my own strange behaviour. With the idea of Tribalness being both sides of the human coins condition, the good and the bad. We must address the wrong and revere the right.”

Maurice Caplice, 2008.
