The Persistent Grid

Venue: Monster Truck Gallery & Studios, 73 Francis St, Dublin 8

Launch night: Thursday 26 Feb 6-8pm

Exhibition continues:  Friday 27 Feb - 2 March 2009

Monster Truck gallery and Studios is pleased to present ‘The Persistent Grid’, a solo exhibition of new work by Irish artist Niall Flaherty. Niall’s practice consists of an ongoing inquiry into the modern world and the manner in which it’s systems replicate themselves within the modern subject. The work also looks at the amplification of this process through ubiquitous technology and supports the critical need to disrupt this dominance as it is distributed through the mass-media. Ultimately the goal of Niall’s practice is the pursuit of new identities beyond modernism. To that end he produces drawings, paintings, objects and documents, and engages in processes and projects which tease out these ideas.

Recent drawings, sculptures and video pieces use the after-image of the modernist grid as a starting point, to query it’s aesthetic power and pervasiveness.’

As well as lecturing in Art and Design, Niall is a co-founder of the Blackletter artist group and has recently joined the Monstertruck gallery’s curatorial team. Much of this new work was initiated on a residency in The Mantua Project, Bellanagare, Co. Roscommon, which took place June ‘08.
