Visit Dublin Art Studios

Ever wondered what an artist’s studio looks like? Curious to find out?

On Saturday & Sunday 19th & 20th April, fifteen visual arts studio organisations in Dublin will open their doors and invite the public in to visit artists’ workplaces. Over 150 artists are participating in VISIT 08, a citywide open studios event. This is the perfect opportunity to view new artwork in artists’ studios and to gain an insight into the work and life of many of Ireland’s most exciting artists.

Come and experience the diversity!

VISIT 08 celebrates the vibrancy of Dublin’s visual arts’ scene and involves over 150 artists working across a wide range of media: printmaking, painting, drawing, sculpture, glassmaking, ceramics, video, film, photography, installation and conceptual art. Many people are unaware of the number of the artists’ studios that are dotted and clustered in unusual settings throughout the city: faded Georgian buildings, renovated stables, urban warehouses, an old mill, a hidden gem above a car salesroom, dormant council flats, an old fire station and a state of the art studio complex. Artists working in these spaces have agreed to open their doors to the public for a special weekend of culture in the city: Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th April.

Now in its second year, VISIT 08 sees a dramatic increase in the number of participating studios and artists since the first event in 2006. VISIT 08 takes place across the city over one weekend with half of the artists’ studios open their doors on Saturday 19th April and the other half on Sunday 20th. Whether you’re a visitor to the city or a native Dubliner, VISIT 08 invites you to indulge your artistic curiosity, by using the dedicated VISIT 08 studio map and brochure, available to pick up at galleries, venues, cafes, and tourist centres citywide or to download from www.visitstudios.com. Alternatively, there are organised walking tours and a bus tour led by specialist guides on offer to the public to join. All events are free of charge.

VISIT 08 is supporting the artistic communities in the heart of the city who are vital to the pulse, energy and vision of Dublin. This exciting open studios event offers the public the chance to meet artists in their studios, view work-in-progress and experience firsthand the different creative spaces often unseen in the city.

So Come and Take a look!

Blackletter Workshop and Preview

ArtFinder is an open interactive project, available through the Blackletter website, which uses online mapping tools to create a dynamic archive of art projects that have taken place outside the gallery. Any artist who has created work of a temporary, ephemeral or location based nature can add a marker to the map, to publish a public record of their project. ArtFinder is intended as a publicity and research tool for artists and curators alike and will form an evolving archive of works.

To illustrate how artists might use the map, we will be showing a selection of entries to the map contributed by Glenn Loughran, Seamus Nolan, Dennis Mc Nulty, Holly Asaa, Hope Inherent (Jennie Moran & Tara Kennedy), Michelle Brown and work from the ´Out of Site´ festivals. As ArtFinder will be live on the Blackletter website from 25th March 2008, this is an opportunity to find out more about how this tool can be of use to you. The short demonstration of ArtFinder will be followed by a drinks reception from 6-8pm.

Blackletter Artist Group is Niall Flaherty, Cliona Harmey and Alan Butler, this project is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland and Dublin City Council. This event is being facilitated by the kind support of Broadstone Studios and Broadstone XL.

100+ Artists’ Studios

An All Day Event
Dublin

Saturday 30 September 2006 for the first time in Dublin, over one hundred artists will open their studio doors to the public on . Seven of the city’s largest artists’ studio groups will take part in VISIT, a unique addition to Dublin´s culural calendar.

VISIT affords the public a rare opportunity to view the many different creative spaces across the city of Dublin, all within one day. The purpose of the event is to provide insight into the spaces where art is made, to view new work and to meet the artists ‘in situ’. Cisitors will be able to engage with artists and their work on both a professional and curious level. VISIT is an initiative by the different artists’ studios organisations in Dublin and aims to promote visual arts to a wider audience.

The collaboration features a range of organisations, from the independent artist-run spaces to some of the more established institutions. Groups and organisations represented invlude: Broadstone Studios, Brunswick Street Studios, Dublin City Council: The Red Stables, Fire Station Artists’ Studios, Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA’s) Artists’ Residency Programme, Pallas Heights and Studios and Temple Bar Gallery and Studios. As in any capital, the artistic community is integral to Dublin’s cultural well-being. Whilegalleries and exhibitions may well be familiar to the public, the ralm of the artis’s studio, normally a private place to test and develop new ideas, reains an air of mystery.

VISIT will focus attention on the often-unseen side of visual arts production. By bringing the audience directly to the artistis’ studios, VISIT offers the public an exciting opportunity to see and experience first-hand the diversity and breadth of art practices that flourish in this city. There will be opportunities for those with a professional and personal interest in collecting, with much of the art available for sale at fair and reasoable prices.
